We have been using the record of the birth of the ministry of Deacons in Acts chapter 6, and the model of the churches in Macedonia, their response to the famine in Jerusalem recorded in 2 Corinthians 8, to examine the response of the leaders and members of the faith community in times of crisis. We identified that the leadership in Acts 6 took a very high-level spiritual approach to the need for a response from them to the care of the needy and most vulnerable in their midst. The Macedonian church members taught us that our first duty is to surrender our hearts to God, and out of that surrender, our hearts become servants of humanity. Today we look at the impact of such a response in times of crisis.
