As Jamaica celebrates Emancipation and Independence we remember that freedom is more than just breaking of chains. It is about the restoration of dignity, identity and voice. Today, we ask a simple but profound question. Can people truly be free if they are ashamed of the language that tells their story?
Every language matters because every person matters to God. Joining us today is Elder John Roomes, a respected language advocate and former Chief Executive Officer of Wycliffe Caribbean. He has been a leading voice in promoting Bible translation into the heart languages of Caribbean peoples, particularly Jamaican Patois. He has passionately championed the value of language as an expression of identity, culture and faith.
Dr Margarett Barnett is a Vice President of Jamaica Theological Seminary. She has spent over 20 years working in private and nonprofit organisations that provide services to young people and their families.
